Twenty years ago, I started building things I'd be proud to point at.
McKenzie Home Improvements started the way most good businesses do — with someone deciding they'd rather do something right than just do it fast. Matt McKenzie has been building in the Shenandoah Valley and Northern Virginia for over twenty years, and in that time he's developed something that can't be replicated by a national franchise: a deep, specific knowledge of this region. Its building inspectors, its material suppliers, its subcontractors. The things that make a project run smoothly here.
We are, at our core, a family business. Matt and Kandi McKenzie run every project together — Matt leading the build, Kandi overseeing operations and client communication. That means you always know who to call, and the answer is always someone who knows your project by name.
We take on fewer projects than we could. That's a deliberate choice. Every client we work with gets our full attention — not a portion of it. When we start on your home, we finish it. On time, as promised, and to a standard we're proud to stand behind.

Matt has over twenty years of hands-on building experience in Northern Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. He manages every project personally — from the initial site visit through the final walkthrough. His standard for finished work is simple: it has to be something he'd be proud to live in himself.
Kandi McKenzie
Director of Operations
Kandi oversees the operational side of every McKenzie project: scheduling, client communication, and making sure nothing falls through the cracks. If you've ever hired a contractor and felt like you were left in the dark, working with Kandi is a different experience entirely.

Consultation
We start with a conversation, not a sales pitch. We visit your home, listen to what you're imagining, and give you an honest assessment of what's possible.

Design & Proposal
We develop a clear, written proposal: scope, timeline, and cost. No vague estimates, no surprise line items later.

Build
We manage every aspect of the build ourselves, working with our trusted network of local subcontractors. You'll hear from us regularly — not just when there's a problem.

Handover
When we're done, we walk through the finished space with you. We don't consider a project complete until you're genuinely happy with what we've built.
